How many Users can I get on a Server?

This is a question since day one with Citrix Presentation Server, Terminal Services...

Actually there is no answer like 42, simply it depends on to many unknown factors that you might find out yourself. Server Hardware (CPU, RAM, HDD Subsystem, NIC), sort of User (Normal or Power User), Applications and there needs on resources etc.

The best way is to test your Hardware in your environment, with your Users and your Applications. Citrix and Microsoft supports you with Server test Kits where you can simulate user interaction.

Remember with a Windows 32Bit OS and the 3GB Switch you have only 3GB for user Memory. The left GIG is reserved for the system. A Desktop session without running any Apps uses about 10-15MB. Also for every user the Server has to load the user Profile with about 0,5-5MB in the System registry.

I have connections or disconnection problems with a DSL/ADSL

Most likely it is a problem with the MTU size of the Client. Default MTU size for ethernet is 1500 but for DSL it's 1492.
Change the MTU value to 1492 decimal in the registry key
HKLM\System\CurrentControlset\Services\tcpip\parameters\interfaces\ID for Adapter

User get's ask for client drive security when login!

This is a feature to protect the client and can ONLY disabled on the client side. It is possible to pre-configure the ica client with a webica.ini file.

There is no option to set the application instance limits in the CMC?

MetaFrame XPs 1.0 has NOT the Application Instance Limits option. Introduced in FR1, but only available in XPa and XPe.

To accomplish that you can use the Citrix policy.

  • create new policy
  • go to properties of the new policy
  •  resource limits
  • limit concurrent logon sessions
  • enable the policy
  • check option:
enter the maximum number of sessions the assigned user can have running at the same time = 1.

It might take some time for policy to take effect, as database need to update.

How can I turn a FAT Client into a Thin Client?

There are many ways to do this and the simplest one is to place an ica-file in the Startup folder.

Next is to change the fat clients windows shell (HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\shell) from explorer.exe to pn.exe so only Program Neigborhood will be started.

Then you can replace the shell with the FREE program "SheLaunch" to make the fat client "more" thin. At the end, have a look at the FREE thin client projects that have really cool solutions!

Please explain what Context Switches/sec are!

Context Switches / sec in System Monitor provides another perspective on how the operating system schedules threads to run on the processor. I have wirtten an article about that topic "Understanding and Troubleshooting context switches"

Where can I download single Win32 version of the current ICA Clients?

Still you can download single Clients at Citrix Client Download page.

New [wfclient] options you should know.

  • ICAKeepAliveEnabled=On
    ICAKeepAliveInterval=

Enables a timer in the ICA Client engine.
  • AlwaysSendPrintScreen=On
Send the PrntScrn key message when users press the PrntScrn key.
  • ProxyFavorIEConnectionSetting=yes
The ICA Client will use the correct proxy settings for the dial-up connection, since the client was checking only the proxy settings for the LAN connection.
  • ProxyUseFQDN=On
The client does NOT try to resolve the Secure Gateway server name but passes the FQDN to the proxy server.
  • ICA Win32 Client Version 8.00 fixed issues

What Ports have to be open for a ICA Connection?

MetaFrame traffic requires TCP port 1494 (or other configured ICA port) to be open, so that ICA traffic may traverse the network. The default TCP port 1494 is used for inbound traffic to the MetaFrame servers. Outbound traffic is via a dynamically chosen TCP port number above 1023. New with Presentation Server 3.0 and above is port 2598 for the session reliability feature.
